Northampton town centre has retained its Purple Flag accreditation for the seventh year running after renewal of the award. Local reporting and partners announced the renewal on 9 February 2026, confirming the town continues to meet international standards for managing the evening and night-time economy. The Purple Flag rating signals to residents and visitors that the town centre is a secure and well-run destination in Northamptonshire.
The award is managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), whose assessors evaluate places against five core standards: Policy Envelope, Wellbeing, Movement, Appeal and Place. ATCM judges and local partners assessed how the town handles issues such as safety, movement (transport) and the range of evening activities. The assessment praised recent Market Square regeneration works — including improved lighting and clearer sight lines — as contributing to a safer pedestrian environment.
Several local organisations work together to maintain these standards, including West Northamptonshire Council, Northamptonshire Police and the Northampton Town Centre BID. The partnership supports initiatives such as the Northampton Guardians — a volunteer charity that patrols Friday and Saturday nights offering welfare support, basic first aid and a safe space — and welfare provision operated through Safer Nights Out (SNO) vans (sometimes referred to locally as the ‘Safety Bus’). Venues across the town also take part in schemes such as ‘Ask for Angela’ to help anyone who feels vulnerable while out with friends.
Northampton is part of a relatively small group of places worldwide to hold Purple Flag accreditation; sources report this as around 90–100 destinations globally. Local leaders say the renewal demonstrates the town is a place where people can enjoy an evening meal or a drink with greater confidence. The council and its partners say they will continue to use these safety measures and partnership working to support local businesses and keep the town centre welcoming for everyone.
