The Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) is urging people across Northamptonshire to register their large kitchen appliances online in February 2026 to ensure they receive immediate alerts if a device becomes a fire hazard.

Recent data from the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) shows that nearly a quarter of homeowners do not hear about safety recalls for items such as washing machines, fridge‑freezers and dishwashers. The research estimates there are around 40 million unregistered appliances in UK homes, meaning millions of devices could be in use without their owners knowing they might have dangerous manufacturing faults that could lead to a fire.

Residents can register both new and older appliances (up to 12 years old) for free on the Register My Appliance website (registermyappliance.org.uk). Chief Fire Officer Nikki Watson said: “Registering an appliance is a simple, free step that could literally save your life. If a manufacturer discovers a fire risk, they can only find you if you are on their list.”

The campaign is especially important for people buying second‑hand machines or keeping older appliances for longer to save money. At the same time, Danielle Stone, the Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, has proposed a £12‑a‑year increase in the fire precept to support the service; those precept proposals will be discussed at the Police, Fire and Crime Panel meeting on 4 February 2026.
