A popular riverside footpath at Cotton End in Northampton, Northamptonshire, will close for nearly a month starting on Monday, 9 March 2026. West Northamptonshire Council has confirmed the path is being shut to allow for roadworks and licensed construction activities.
The route, which runs alongside the River Nene, is frequently used by dog walkers and pedestrians travelling between Far Cotton and the town centre. It is expected to remain closed to the public until 3:30pm on Saturday, 4 April 2026.
This closure happens as work enters the final stages of the Queen Eleanor Interchange improvement project. The wider scheme to upgrade the nearby roundabout was previously delayed but is now aiming for completion in Spring 2026.
A signed diversion route through the Southbridge area will be in place for the duration of the works. People visiting riverside businesses like The Pomfret Arms or students heading to the University of Northampton should follow the official signs and allow extra time for their journeys.
The council is urging everyone who uses the route to follow the signed path while the riverside walk is inaccessible. This temporary measure marks one of the final stages of the multi-million-pound transport upgrade in the south of the town.
