Residents in Wellingborough now have the opportunity to influence the future of their high street as North Northamptonshire Council has launched a public consultation on a new town centre masterplan. The project, which has a budget of £65,000, aims to revitalise the area after it was identified as being most in need of regeneration among four towns in the region.
The consultation period runs from 5 May 2026 until 15 June 2026. This initiative is part of a broader, phased strategy to improve all town centres across the area, aligning with the council’s long-term BIG50 Future Vision to 2050. The masterplan focuses on five specific areas, known as intervention areas, intended to help address local challenges, including a 16.4 per cent vacancy rate in the town centre which currently sits above the national average of 13.8 per cent.
To help guide the development of the plan, a focus group has been created, featuring representatives from the local town council, police, business community, and various local services. Residents who wish to learn more and share their views in person can attend one of two open days held in the town. These events will take place at the Swansgate Shopping Centre on 12 May 2026 and at the Wellingborough Library on 27 May 2026, with both sessions running from 10am to 4pm.
