Samantha Curtis, 59, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after her dangerous driving caused a fatal head-on collision in Northampton, Northamptonshire. The incident, which happened on 13 December 2024, resulted in the death of 83-year-old Yvonne Bruce and caused serious injuries to her grandson.

According to Northamptonshire Police, Curtis was driving a blue Ford EcoSport on Talavera Way when she crossed into the wrong lane. She crashed head-on into a red Vauxhall Agila driven by Daniel Bruce, who suffered two leg fractures,  a deep hip laceration and a fractured ankle that required surgery to fix with a metal rod.

Investigators found that Curtis, of Bouverie Road, was taking 17 different prescription medications at the time of the crash. Detective Constable Eleanor Hudson said these drugs may have caused the driver to feel sleepy or lose focus, and she reminded residents that legal medicines can still make driving dangerous if they cause drowsiness.

Under Sentencing Council rules, Curtis was given a reduced term for admitting to the crimes in January and was sentenced on 23 March 2026. Along with her prison term, she was banned from driving for eight years and ten months and must pass an extended driving test before she can get her licence back.

Mrs Bruce, who was known to her family as Nanny Tiggy, had recently moved to the area from Essex to be closer to her relatives. During the court hearing, a bystander named Jessica Woodhouse was given a High Sheriff Award for her bravery in staying with Mrs Bruce at the crash site and helping with medical care. Figures from the Northamptonshire Roads Policing Team show that 31 people were killed on local roads during 2024.
