Norwich City Council has reopened The Halls in Norwich, Norfolk, after a massive project to update the historic 14th-century site. The venue, which includes St Andrew’s and Blackfriars’ Halls, is now available for the public to hire for weddings, concerts, and conferences as of March 2026.

The refurbishment cost approximately £8 million and involved installing new heating, lighting, and sound technology while preserving the ancient building. Funding for the work came from a £3.6 million government grant and £500,000 from Arts Council England, with the rest paid for by the city council.

The council is managing the building itself after a legal dispute between local groups led to the cancellation of plans to hire an outside company. Councillor Carli Harper confirmed the council took over direct management to keep the venue running. To maintain a local feel, an independent business called The Bicycle Shop has been hired to run the bar and provide drinks for visitors.

The first major performance at the venue will feature the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus on 21 March 2026. This will be followed by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in May, which is expected to bring extra trade to nearby shops and businesses in the St Andrew’s Plain area.

Councillor Claire Kidman said the venue has been turned into a modern space that everyone in the community can enjoy. Information about booking the space and the full list of upcoming events is now available on the council website.
