Icy Roads Cause Travel Warnings Across Norwich Today

The Met Office has issued a yellow ice warning for Norwich, Norfolk, which remains in effect until 10:00 AM on February 17, 2026. The warning follows a night of rain and sleet that cleared to leave wet surfaces, which then froze as temperatures dropped rapidly across the region.

Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are being told to expect slippery roads and pavements that could cause travel delays or minor accidents. Strong northwesterly winds are also expected to hit the coast this morning, adding to the difficult conditions for those travelling in and out of the city.

To help manage the conditions, the Norfolk County Council highways team is gritting approximately 2,200 miles of the county road network. While major bus routes and busy city centre paths are being treated, the A11 and A47 roads are managed separately by National Highways.

Travel through the city is already disrupted by the six-week closure of Magdalen Street for the Anglia Square demolition project. First Bus has diverted several services onto secondary roads, which may not be part of the primary gritting routes and could be extra slippery this morning.

Local residents are advised to take extra care on side streets and untreated footpaths that may have developed icy patches overnight. Official guidance suggests allowing more time for morning journeys until the ice begins to melt later today.
