On 26 February 2026, a community project, the Wildlife of Mousehold Heath, Norwich, was newly launched to help residents record the plants and animals found at Mousehold Heath in Norwich, Norfolk, to support local conservation efforts. The initiative uses a public page on the iNaturalist UK website to collect sightings of wildlife from anyone visiting the area. This project aims to record all types of animals, plants, and fungi to help guide the work of the Mousehold Heath Conservators and Norwich City Council.
Mousehold Heath is a 184-acre nature reserve that provides a home for creatures like butterflies, dragonflies, foxes, and common lizards. People can take part by uploading photos that are tagged with a location to help build a clear map of the species living across the site. This evidence will be used to help volunteers and council staff manage the heathland effectively.
The information gathered will also prepare the community for the global City Nature Challenge event that takes place on the 24th-27th April 2026. Organisers hope the new digital records will provide the details needed to track the recovery of rare species in the city. By sharing what they find, residents can help protect one of the most historic green spaces in Norwich.
