Oxford City Council reopened the towpath between Fiddler’s Island and Sidelings Island in Oxford, Oxfordshire, on 20 March 2026. The path had been closed to the public after recent heavy rainfall caused structural damage and made the surface unsafe for travel.

Council staff have now removed the locks from the gates at both ends of the riverside route, restoring access for pedestrians and cyclists. This stretch of the path is part of the Thames Path national trail and serves as a key route for local walkers, dog owners, and joggers near Port Meadow.

Authorities advise that while the gates are open, some parts of the path surface may still be worn due to the recent high water levels. Residents are reminded that as little as 15cm of fast-flowing water can knock an adult off their feet. Current flood alerts are available on GOV.UK or by calling Floodline at 0345 988 1188 with the quick dial code 171176.

The Environment Agency is preparing to start work on a large flood protection project in late 2026 to help prevent future closures. Meanwhile, members of the Oxford Flood Alliance have recently begun signing up as official flood wardens to help monitor local river conditions and support the community.
