Residents in Oxford should prepare for significant travel disruption on the morning of 1 May 2026 as road closures for the city’s annual May Morning celebrations will force the diversion of up to 20 bus routes.

The Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel have announced that services will be affected between 02:00 and 09:00 while Magdalen Bridge, Longwall Street, and a section of the High Street are closed to traffic. Passengers planning to travel into the city centre during these early hours are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, as major delays are expected across both networks.

The closures are part of the city’s historic May Morning tradition, which dates back more than 500 years. The event draws thousands of spectators to the area near Magdalen Bridge, where at 6am, the Magdalen College Choir sings the Hymnus Eucharisticus from the top of Magdalen Tower to mark the arrival of spring. Last year, the celebration attracted approximately 16,500 attendees.

Paula Redway, the Cultural Development Manager at Oxford City Council, described the event as a uniquely local experience that brings together residents of all ages and backgrounds. While the festivities are a much-loved tradition, the scale of the gathering necessitates the extensive traffic management measures currently planned for the morning.
