A scientist at Christ Church, University of Oxford in Oxford, Oxfordshire, has been awarded a five-year grant worth over £1.95 million to develop better ways of treating brain conditions. Dr Joram van Rheede secured the funding on 12 March 2026 to create new technology that uses sleep patterns to make medical treatments more precise.

The funding was provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council through a specialist research award. This five-year project will focus on developing what the team describes as sleep-aware brain stimulation.

These new therapies are designed to be an important step toward smarter and more targeted care for various neurological conditions. By focusing on how the brain works during sleep, the researcher hopes to create more personalised medical interventions for patients.

This project represents a significant milestone for the college and aims to place the local research team at the forefront of medical technology in the UK. The grant will provide the long-term support needed for this ambitious work over the coming years.
