A flood warning issued by the Environment Agency remains in effect for the River Nene near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, on 4 February 2026, and North Bank Road has been closed while the warning is in force.

Peterborough City Council has shut North Bank Road between Bedford Cottages (Northey Road) and the Dog‑in‑a‑Doublet Sluice (North Side). The council says the closure will remain in place until the risk of flooding subsides. The Environment Agency warns that during periods of high tide the River Nene is unable to discharge into the sea (a ‘tide lock’ condition), which can lead to localised flooding of the road.

The Environment Agency says it is operating the Dog‑in‑a‑Doublet sluice to discharge water during low tide and reduce flood risk where possible. While the immediate impact is on the road, residents in low‑lying areas such as Sutton and Thorpe Meadows have been urged to remain vigilant.

Motorists who normally use North Bank Road are being advised to follow diversion routes — for example the A47 via Thorney or the A605 via Whittlesey. Local reporting and official guidance urge drivers to avoid flooded roads; authorities warn that driving through floodwater is dangerous and that bow waves from vehicles can affect adjacent properties.
