The Nene Park Trust is inviting residents in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, to a public information event on 13 April 2026 to view revised designs for the Lakeside Activity Centre. The meeting will take place from 4pm to 7pm at The Lakeside Hub in Ferry Meadows to allow the community to see the updated plans before they are submitted for approval.
The new proposals describe a building that is 30 per cent smaller than the version originally approved in 2021, with the main tower height reduced from 34 metres to 22 metres. This scaled-back design focuses on bouldering, which is a style of climbing done at lower heights without ropes, and includes a small cafe and accessible changing rooms.
According to Peterborough City Council, the project has secured £1.5 million from the Government Towns Fund and is expected to create 31 permanent jobs. The trust updated the plans due to a rise in construction costs and a shift in the local climbing market toward bouldering facilities.
If the new plans are approved, construction is expected to begin in autumn 2026 with the first phase of the building set to open in autumn 2027. The climbing tower would then be added as part of a second phase once further funding has been found for the project.
