The Peterborough City Council Cabinet is meeting on 23 March 2026 to discuss creating a new joint board to manage the future of the city centre in Cambridgeshire. This group, known as the City Centre Growth Board, would be responsible for looking after projects meant to bring new life to the local area.

The proposed board would bring together the council, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, and the national agency Homes England. It would also include people from local businesses and the arts to help make decisions on future building plans.

The idea for the board came after a study of the city centre found new opportunities for growth. Councillor Mohammed Farooq, who is responsible for regeneration, is bringing the plan to the cabinet to help make it easier to start and finish local improvement projects.

Council Leader Shabina Qayyum and Mayor Paul Bristow see this new board as a starting point for even bigger plans. The long-term goal is to set up a Mayoral Development Corporation, which is a special type of organisation designed to speed up large-scale building and improvement works across the city.

This move is part of a wider effort to plan for the city’s future, which currently includes asking the public for their views on what the centre should look like. The council intends to use the new board to turn these long-term visions into real results for residents.
