On 25 February 2026, the Department of Health and Social Care announced a major funding increase for local doctors in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, to guarantee same-day appointments for urgent cases. The new rules aim to end the difficult morning rush for bookings and reduce the reliance on hospital emergency services.

The government is providing an extra 485 million pounds for doctor services, with nearly 300 million pounds from existing budgets, being moved directly to individual surgeries to help them hire more staff. According to Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, this change is designed to fix long phone queues and help patients who struggle with digital booking systems.

This update comes as Peterborough City Hospital, managed by the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, has faced intense pressure with patients being treated in corridors. In February 2026, the trust reported that more than 100 beds across their hospitals were filled with patients suffering from a norovirus outbreak, making it harder for the emergency department to cope with non-urgent visits.

To give doctors more time with patients, the government has permanently removed 32 different administrative targets to cut down on office work. However, some medical groups have raised concerns that the new requirement for same-day appointments might put too much stress on medical staff if recruitment does not keep up with demand.

Local health officials hope the extra funding and new rules will stop patients from getting lost in the system between their local doctor and the hospital. By making it easier to see a doctor quickly, the plan aims to ensure people in the community get the care they need without having to wait in long queues at the city hospital.
