Peterborough City Council has started a city-wide grass-cutting and street-cleaning programme across Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, to tidy up public spaces between 16 March and 8 April 2026. This maintenance cycle comes as the local authority prepares to take over services from a private contractor, though officials warn that only urgent safety issues will be fixed during this window.

During this period, the Peterborough City Council will only focus on tasks that involve immediate health and safety risks. This means workers will look at issues like blocked views for drivers or access problems, while purely cosmetic or aesthetic repairs will be put on hold until the cycle is finished.

The council is currently in the middle of a major change as it brings public services back under its own direct control. By 31 March 2026, the local authority will end its contract with the external company Peterborough Ltd and manage street cleaning and bin collections itself.

This maintenance work arrives at a time when road conditions have been a major concern for local people. Reports of potholes have increased significantly in the first few months of 2026, with nearly 800 separate reports filed by residents so far this year.

Council officials have clarified that non-urgent road surface repairs and other cosmetic requests will not be actioned until the cleaning window concludes in April. Residents are encouraged to continue using official channels to report any genuine safety concerns that require immediate attention.
