Residents in Peterborough now have more flexibility when visiting their local libraries, with Peterborough Libraries & Archives with Peterborough Libraries adding a total of 92.5 extra hours of Open+ access each week across three sites. Orton Library’s reintroduction begins today18 May 2026, building on earlier extensions at Woodston and Thorney libraries that added 27 and 53.5 hours respectively.

The service expansion focuses on the Orton, Woodston, and Thorney locations. At Orton Library, 12 hours of self-service access are being reintroduced as part of a two-month pilot programme. Meanwhile, Woodston Library is gaining an additional 27 hours per week, and Thorney Library is receiving an extra 53.5 hours per week.

These extended hours are provided through a system called Open+. This is a free, unstaffed service that uses secure electronic access technology, including security cameras, access control systems, and automated equipment. During these times, members can browse, borrow and return items, use public computers, and access study spaces independently.

Firzana Shaheen, Service Manager for Peterborough Libraries, said the organisation is pleased to have extended these hours to provide residents with greater flexibility in how and when they use their local library. To use the service, library members aged 16 and over must opt in by speaking with a staff member at any library and agreeing to the Terms and Conditions.
