Poole residents will have the chance to board local workboats and speak with their crews at a free open day on Poole Quay on Friday 14 August 2026. The inaugural event, organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners, runs from 2pm to 6pm and requires no advance booking.
Harbour Master Harry Gregory and his team will be on hand to answer questions about the vessels and talk about careers in the marine industry. Gregory began his maritime career at 16 as a sailing instructor in Poole, later spent five years at Littlehampton, serving as deputy harbour master before becoming harbour master, and took up his current role in September 2023. Visitors will be able to step onto a range of locally operated workboats and get guided tours directly from the crews.
PHC, the statutory harbour authority for Europe’s largest natural harbour, says the open day aims to give a practical look at the working port and the jobs it supports. The timing in mid-August places the event during the harbour’s busiest season, when marine operations are at their most visible.
Entry is free and no tickets are needed. Anyone interested in finding out more about what happens beyond the quayside—or considering a future working on the water—can turn up on the day between 2pm and 6pm.
