Residents and commuters in Fareham, Hampshire, face significant travel changes after Hampshire County Council published a temporary road‑closure notice for Common Lane, Fareham, showing the road closed from 5 February 2026 to 5 August 2026 (the notice lists 5 February as the approximate start date).

Hampshire County Council is leading the work to upgrade the nearby M27 Junction 10 and to provide the supporting infrastructure for the Welborne Garden Village development. The scheme includes utility diversions and road realignments to tie the new junction into the local network — work that supports the Welborne development (planned for up to 6,000 homes). Under planning conditions, more than 1,160 homes cannot be occupied until the new ‘all‑moves’ Junction 10 is completed and operational.

Drivers who normally use Common Lane to travel toward Portsmouth should expect signed diversions. Hampshire County Council and National Highways have advised a signed diversion via the A27 will be used during major M27 works; drivers may also be affected by changes around M27 Junction 11 (Fareham) depending on the diversion arrangements in place.

First Portsmouth, Fareham & Gosport (First Bus) has published temporary stop closures and service‑update notices related to local roadworks and diversions, warning that some services may be delayed or diverted while works are under way (see First Bus service updates for details).

Hampshire County Council says reasonable facilities will be provided to allow access to adjacent premises while works are carried out, so residents and businesses on Common Lane should retain local access but may encounter temporary traffic signals or specified access points.

National Highways and Hampshire County Council say the wider M27/Junction 10 improvement works are due to finish in autumn/winter 2026. Authorities have warned that closures of local back‑routes such as Common Lane are likely to put extra pressure on main routes and junctions — including the Delme Roundabout and the A27 — and drivers are being urged to plan journeys in advance.

Residents should check Hampshire County Council’s public notices and the M27 Junction 10 project pages, and consult operator updates (for example First Bus) for the latest diversion and service information during the closure.
