Residents in Portsmouth, Hampshire, will see new road safety measures and improved play areas after local Labour councillors secured specific funding in the city budget on 24 February 2026. The agreement ensures that money will be spent on projects like new crossings and security cameras following feedback from people living in the community.
The funding includes a new raised zebra crossing for Lawrence Road and measures to slow down traffic in the Highbury Grove area of Cosham. Additionally, five mobile security cameras will be purchased to help tackle anti-social behaviour in the Charles Dickens ward.
According to Councillor Charlotte Gerada, the leader of the Labour group, £80,000 has also been set aside for new play equipment for children with disabilities in local parks. The budget also includes funding for the refurbishment of Anchorage Lodge Community Centre following a successful amendment by the Conservative group.
Portsmouth City Council approved the final budget for 2026/2027, which includes a 4.99 per cent increase in council tax. Labour councillors worked with other political groups to make sure these local safety and community projects were included in the final spending plan.
