Police Seek Witnesses After Violent Stabbing in Portsmouth

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a 50-year-old man was left with life-changing injuries following a stabbing in Portsmouth, Hampshire. The attack took place at around 4:30pm on Wednesday 28 January 2026 near the junction of Fyning Road and Charles Street.

Emergency services attended and the man was located with stab wounds to his abdomen. He was taken to hospital for treatment to life-changing injuries and his condition has been described as serious but stable.

As part of the investigation, officers have arrested nine people. The force’s statement (04/02/2026) gives the breakdown as follows:

  • A 16-year-old boy from Southsea, three 15-year-old boys (all from Portsmouth), a 14-year-old boy from Portsmouth and a 13-year-old boy from Portsmouth have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder; they have been bailed with conditions until 28 April 2026.
  • A 19-year-old man from Southsea has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been bailed with conditions until 30 April 2026.
  • A 14-year-old boy from Portsmouth has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and has been bailed until 28 April 2026.
  • A 15-year-old boy from Southsea has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and obstructing/resisting a constable; he has been bailed with conditions until 29 April 2026.

 

Investigating officers are seeking anyone who was in the Arundel Street Garden or surrounding area around or after 4:00pm on 28 January. They are asking residents and drivers to check any relevant CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or mobile-phone footage from the area during that time.

According to local crime data, violence and sexual offences accounted for approximately 42% of all reported crimes in Portsmouth last year.
