Portsmouth City Council’s adult social care services have secured a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission, the council announced. The assessment, carried out last autumn, examined how the council organises and delivers support for adults needing care across the PO1 to PO6 postcodes.

Residents told inspectors that staff are kind, caring and listen to them, and said they feel respected and involved in decisions about their care. The report praised a strong focus on helping people stay independent at home through the right equipment and community services. Inspectors also highlighted close working with the NHS and other partners to provide coordinated care, and noted that staff feel supported by a council investing in training and workforce development.

Councillor Matthew Winnington, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Health and Care, welcomed the rating but acknowledged areas for improvement. The closure of several long-standing independent care providers in the city has left unpaid carers with fewer short break options. The council has already started commissioning new services to expand respite choices, and is developing local provision for people with complex needs who currently receive care outside Portsmouth, with a commitment to support their return where preferred.

Residents needing adult social care support can contact the council on 023 9268 0810. Phone lines are open Monday to Thursday from 8.30am to 5pm, and on Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
