Portsmouth, Hampshire, will receive nearly £10.5 million in new funding to improve the city’s flood defences during 2026. Stephen Morgan, the MP for Portsmouth South, announced the money will help protect the waterfront and local communities from rising sea levels and extreme weather.
The funding is part of a £1.4 billion national investment package for the 2026/27 financial year. It will pay for repairs to the Farlington Marshes embankment and continue work on the coastal protection scheme in Southsea.
These local projects are part of a larger plan to invest at least £10.5 billion into flood resilience across England between 2024 and 2036. According to the UK Parliament, this national programme is designed to better protect homes, businesses, and essential services.
Floods Minister Emma Hardy explained that the funding is necessary to fix defences that have declined over several years. The work aims to prevent the level of disruption seen during recent severe winters and provide long-term security for the city.
