Adverse weather stopped garden waste and food caddy collections across parts of Rayleigh on Wednesday, 24 June, Rochford District Council has confirmed. Roads in Hawkwell and Hockley were also affected, with crews unable to complete scheduled rounds.

The council is asking residents to leave their garden waste bins and food caddies out, with a rescheduled collection promised as soon as possible. “The advice is to leave your garden waste and food caddy out and we will collect as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience,” a spokesperson said. The disruption followed an earlier change on Tuesday, when rounds began at 6am across the district to help crews work through the cooler hours during a spell of high temperatures.

Normal collection times are expected to resume on Monday, 29 June. Anyone who believes their bin was missed must report it within two working days of their scheduled collection using the online form on the council website. Reports made after that window will not be actioned until the next scheduled collection day.

The early morning starts allowed crews to finish before the worst of the heat, with the council noting that all bins must be placed at the property boundary by 7am. The district’s standard service provides a weekly garden waste and food caddy collection alongside fortnightly recyclables and non-recyclables rounds. Past disruptions have occasionally hit the service, most recently during staff shortages linked to the pandemic, when compostable collections were paused.
