Reading Borough Council has confirmed it will not immediately open a year-round emergency night shelter, despite calls from residents and charities for more permanent support in Reading, Berkshire.

Lead Councillor for Housing Matt Yeo stated this week that the local authority already provides 270 bed spaces and is focusing on moving people into permanent homes. He explained that the current support system is an effective way to help those sleeping on the streets.

The council is currently preparing a new housing plan called the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2026-2031, which will be considered by the Housing, Neighbourhoods and Leisure Committee in March 2026. This plan will set out how the town handles homelessness and support services for the next five years.

Local residents and charities are being encouraged to share their views through a public consultation to help shape the final strategy. This is an opportunity for the community to suggest improvements to how support is provided across the borough before the new plan is finished.
