Residents in Reading are being advised to prepare for changes to their bin collection days throughout May 2026 due to two upcoming bank holidays. Reading Borough Council has confirmed that waste and recycling collections will shift by one day later during the weeks beginning 4 May and 25 May.
The adjustment affects all services, including general waste, recycling, food waste, and subscription garden waste collections. To ensure all households are served, the council will carry out catch-up collections on the Saturdays at the end of each affected week.
The council, which manages services for approximately 66,000 households, is encouraging residents to verify their updated collection dates online using the bin collection calendar. Officials note that if a bin is not emptied on the expected revised day, residents should leave it out, as it will be collected during extended hours or on the following working day.
These temporary changes follow a significant service redesign introduced in June 2025. That initiative updated collection routines for nearly 80 per cent of homes in the area, moving to a system where only one type of waste is collected across the borough each day to improve service resilience and efficiency.
