The Aquadrome Bridge in Rickmansworth will close for up to two weeks starting Monday 20 April 2026 to allow for essential landscaping and the removal of Japanese Knotweed at the nearby Ebury Play Area. The closure, which is expected to last until no later than Friday 1 May 2026, will restrict access at the primary entry point from Riverside Drive.
While the bridge is closed, pedestrians will still be able to reach the town centre and the Rickmansworth Aquadrome. According to Three Rivers District Council, an established diversion route will be in place with on-site signage to guide visitors.
The work is part of a wider effort to finish long-awaited improvements at Ebury Play Area, which has been closed since January 2025 following the discovery of Japanese Knotweed. The current remediation project, which began on 18 March 2026, involves The School Renovation Company working alongside invasive plant specialists Environet to remove the weeds, replace contaminated soil, and rebuild the playground. This phase of the project is expected to be completed no later than 8 July 2026.
Emma Sheridan, Associate Director for Environment at the council, stated that the contractors are working professionally and are keeping within the project timeline. She apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary bridge closure, noting that it is necessary to ensure the work is carried out safely.
The Aquadrome itself serves as a Local Nature Reserve and holds Green Flag status. Beyond its role as a community space, the area acts as a natural floodplain, helping to protect Rickmansworth from overflow from the River Colne.
