People driving between Watford and Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire are calling for urgent repairs to fix deep potholes on major routes following a cold winter. Residents in areas such as Croxley Green say the current state of the roads has led to frequent tyre and suspension damage to their vehicles.

The main concerns focus on the A412 (Rickmansworth Road) and the A411 (Watford Road), with residents and local campaigners identifying hotspots near Watford Grammar School for Boys and Croxley station (on the Metropolitan line). The Watford Observer has reported various planned and ongoing roadworks in the area, but locals say more work is needed to keep the roads safe.

Hertfordshire County Council is managing its highways maintenance programme in the context of a national funding increase — the government pledged an additional £500 million for local road maintenance for 2025/26. The council has trialled autonomous pothole-detection and repair technology developed by Robotiz3d, and it has separately trialled faster-repair products such as Roadmender asphalt that incorporate recycled tyre material to speed up and make repairs greener.

While National Highways has completed some resurfacing work on the nearby A41, many local routes including B-roads and the A412 remain uneven. Residents who spot problems can report faults and follow repair progress via the Hertfordshire Highway Faults online portal.
