Rickmansworth Library is set to reopen its doors to the public on Thursday, 9 April 2026, marking the end of a two-year closure following an electrical fire and subsequent building repairs.

The library, located on the town’s High Street, closed on 18 April 2024 after a fire broke out in the staff workroom. Herts Fire and Rescue attended the scene with three fire engines from Rickmansworth and Watford, containing the blaze while preventing its spread beyond the workroom, though smoke damage affected the entire building.

While Hertfordshire County Council originally expected repairs to take only a few weeks, the project faced significant complications. Investigators discovered that the roof required a complete replacement due to pre-existing leaks unrelated to the fire. Further delays were caused by complex insurance claims and the necessity of replacing the building’s heating system.

Throughout the closure, residents were directed to a temporary service operated by the council at the 1st Rickmansworth Scout Group headquarters on Ebury Way. However, many in the community found the limited facilities, which offered only a small selection of books and specific children’s activities, to be insufficient. Residents expressed concern that the lack of a full library service negatively impacted families and those without easy transport to alternative locations in Croxley Green or Watford.

The prolonged absence of the service led to friction between local authorities. Three Rivers District Council had offered to host the library at their own offices, but the proposal was rejected by the county council due to disagreements over the associated costs. Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst OBE, leader of the district council, frequently voiced public frustration regarding the lack of progress and clear timelines for the building’s restoration.

Local county councillor Vishal Patel also maintained contact with council officers to push for the work to be finished as quickly as possible. With the building works now complete, the library will resume full operations this week.
