Weekend Road Closures on A40 May Delay Journeys From Rickmansworth

Drivers and public-transport users from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, should plan for extra travel time as Transport for London (TfL) has started a series of weekend closures on the eastbound A40 Westway. The maintenance work is taking place on the elevated carriageway that carries traffic into the city and is expected to continue until around mid-April 2026.

The closures began on 23 January 2026 and are scheduled to run each weekend from 22:00 on Friday to 05:00 on Monday. The eastbound (into-London) lanes are closed between the Westway roundabout (near Wood Lane) and the Marylebone Flyover / Marylebone Road while contractors replace worn expansion joints and install new waterproofing on the structure.

Traffic is being diverted onto the A404 and other local routes (including signed diversions using Harrow Road in places), which is likely to increase congestion for motorists travelling from the Rickmansworth area. National Highways provides travel updates for M25 and strategic routes and local highways authorities are monitoring the knock-on effects on major junctions and feeder roads.

To avoid delays, residents are being advised to consider rail and Underground options. TfL and other travel advisers are encouraging people to use the Metropolitan line from Rickmansworth station where practical — services run into central London and avoid the area affected by the Westway closures — while the roadworks continue through the spring.
