On February 12, 2026, Warwick District Council worked with Warwickshire Police and experts from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to inspect 53 taxis and private hire vehicles in Royal Leamington Spa. The multi-agency operation was designed to ensure that licensed transport remains safe for residents using the services for work, medical appointments, and nights out.

Inspectors identified three vehicles with serious safety defects, including a bald tyre, a faulty indicator, and illegal window tints, resulting in immediate prohibitions. One of these drivers was issued a fixed penalty notice for their front windows being tinted too darkly; however, the vehicle was permitted to return to service after the tint was removed at the scene. An additional 14 drivers were issued warnings for minor licensing infringements that will require administrative follow-up.

Mechanical experts from local nominated garages H M Bryan and Sons Ltd and Tyreman Ltd assisted in the inspections. Councillor Jim Sinnott, Portfolio Holder for Safer, Healthier and Active Communities, said the council takes its responsibilities seriously and “will not hesitate to take action to guarantee the public’s safety.”

These enforcement checks follow a 30 per cent increase in local taxi fares that was implemented in May 2024. The council aims to reassure the community that vehicle standards are being rigorously maintained following recent concerns raised regarding licensed transport safety.
