Bus passengers in Royal Tunbridge Wells will face disruptions until 21 April 2026 as roadworks on Major Yorks Road force a diversion for two major routes. The closure, ordered by Kent County Council to allow for new culvert installation, affects Metrobus services 231 and 291.

During the closure, which stretches between the junction with A26 Eridge Road and the junction with Hungershall Park, buses will be unable to serve the stops at The Pantiles, Chapel Place, and Major York’s Road. Passengers who usually rely on these stops are advised by Metrobus to use the Tunbridge Wells Station or the Spa Hotel as alternative boarding points.

The road closure is the latest in a series of infrastructure projects affecting the area, which has seen repeated works since 2024, including previous drainage improvements and an ongoing gas network upgrade project managed by SGN. Following the conclusion of these current culvert works, SGN is expected to begin a new phase of gas network upgrades on the A264 Langton Road starting 22 April 2026, which is anticipated to last approximately 11 weeks.

Drivers navigating the area should follow the official diversion route, which directs traffic via A26 Eridge Road, A26 London Road, A264 Church Road, A264 Mount Ephraim, and A264 Bishops Down.
