Residents in Southampton planning trips during the upcoming half-term and bank holiday can now access discounted travel as part of the first-ever May Rail Sale launched by South Western Railway.

The rail operator is offering 40,000 tickets at reduced prices across its network, with fares starting from £6 each way. Travellers can book these discounted tickets until Monday 18 May for journeys taking place between Saturday 23 and Sunday 31 May 2026.

Southampton is included in the sale, with fares to the city starting from £9 each way. The promotion covers more than 100 destinations across the South West, including heritage sites like Winchester and Salisbury for £9, as well as coastal locations such as Bournemouth, Poole, and Weymouth starting from £12 each way.

Recent research by the company highlights a shift in how people are approaching their holidays, with 34 per cent of respondents noting that lower costs are the main driver for choosing short trips within the UK. Among families with children, 47 per cent identified cost as a primary factor in their travel decisions, while 57 per cent prioritised family-friendly activities for their day trips.

To help reduce costs further, eligible passengers can use their railcards to receive an additional one-third off the already discounted sale prices. This includes discounts for 16-25, 26-30, Family & Friends, Senior, HM Forces, Disabled Persons, Veterans, and Two Together railcard holders.
