Councillor Lee Whitbread, who represents the Redbridge ward, was suspended from the Labour Party in Southampton, Hampshire, on February 20, 2026. This decision follows a confidential complaint and means he will no longer represent the party while an internal investigation takes place.

While the investigation is ongoing, Mr Whitbread will continue to serve as a councillor but will sit as an independent member of Southampton City Council. This change allows him to keep working for local residents, although he will no longer be part of the majority group during council meetings or committees.

The Labour Party has stated that it takes all complaints seriously and will conduct a full review following its official rules and procedures. Mr Whitbread has been a representative in the area for many years, having first been elected in 2012 and most recently returning to his seat in May 2023.

Residents in the Redbridge area may face some uncertainty regarding how their local issues and requests for help are managed during the suspension period. There have been calls for more information regarding who will handle the day-to-day duties for the ward while the internal party process is completed.
