Southampton has secured a place in the Championship playoff semi-finals after finishing a strong league campaign in fourth position. The team confirmed their spot following a 3-1 victory over Preston North End on 2 May 2026, marking the end of their regular season.

The win at Preston saw goals from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ross Stewart, and Cyle Larin, extending the team’s unbeaten run to 19 league matches.  The team finished the season with 80 points from 46 games.

Southampton will face Middlesbrough in the upcoming semi-final round. The first leg is set to take place at the Riverside Stadium on 9 May, with the return match at home in Southampton on 12 May. The club heads into the playoffs as the current favourite to win, holding odds of 9/4.

This success marks a significant turnaround for the side, which was sitting 21st in the table in November 2025. Following the appointment of head coach Tonda Eckert on 5 December 2025, the team climbed the rankings to reach the playoff position. Eckert noted that the players are currently in top form and prepared for the challenge ahead.
