The Mayflower Theatre Trust and Mayflower Academy Limited are set to merge into one organisation on 30 March 2026 to improve arts services for residents in Southampton, Hampshire. The move brings the main theatre and its studio-based arm under a single legal structure to make it easier for schools, parents, and students to access workshops and youth projects.

This change follows an independent review carried out in 2025 which suggested that combining the two groups would make the organisation stronger. Mayflower Academy Limited, which runs the studios in Guildhall Square, will be absorbed into the main trust.

The merger aims to simplify how local people book and take part in activities like the Mayflower Youth Theatre and Summer Youth Projects. It also supports the Schools Partnership Programme launched in January 2026, which works with local schools such as Oasis Academy Lordshill and Redbridge Community School.

While the administrative side is being simplified, the Mayflower Theatre will close from May to August 2026 for essential repairs and building work. During this four-month closure, the annual youth production will move to the studios to ensure local performances can continue.

Arts Council England has agreed to transfer existing funding to the unified trust to ensure community projects remain secure. Both Southampton City Council and national arts leaders have backed the merger as a way to provide long-term security for the city’s cultural venues.
