Solent University has partnered with GO! Southampton to launch a new support programme designed to help independent shops in the city centre thrive. The 12-week initiative, known as Retail Remedies, matches local business owners with university expertise and student creativity to improve their shops and enhance the experience for their customers.

The programme is being delivered by staff and students from Re:So, the university’s student-led retail and consultancy enterprise. During the 12-week period, participating businesses receive 10 hours of specialist support. This includes an in-store assessment, a custom-made improvement pack, and follow-up advice to help owners put practical changes into action.

Up to 12 local retailers will receive support through the scheme, with an initial group of five businesses already taking part. As part of the launch, students Kitty Gray and Louna Creouw-Potez have started consultancy work with the Kadampa Meditation Centre and the independent art space Gallery Grounds.

Lesley Taylor, a senior lecturer at Solent University who leads the project, said the initiative combines academic knowledge and industry insight to offer retailers low-cost improvements they can implement quickly to stay competitive. The programme forms part of wider efforts to regenerate the city centre and aligns with the long-term Southampton Renaissance Vision.

GO! Southampton serves as the business improvement district for the area, representing more than 630 local businesses. Established in 2017, the group focuses on supporting the city’s commercial success and strengthening the local high street.
