Police have maintained an increased presence in Southend-on-Sea throughout the Bank Holiday weekend following a violent disturbance on Friday, 1 May 2026, that left two teenagers with serious knife wounds.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:50pm on Southend High Street, where a group of around 30 young people were involved in a fight. During the encounter, participants used weapons including bottles and knives. Two victims sustained facial injuries that have been described by Essex Police as potentially life-changing, though they are not thought to be life-threatening.
In response to the violence, officers implemented a dispersal order covering the city centre, the High Street, Queensway through to Hamlet Court Road, and the seafront. This order, issued under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime & Policing Act, remained in effect until 8pm on Sunday, 3 May 2026, allowing police to disperse individuals to prevent further crime or distress. Additionally, a search order under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act was enforced until 8:45pm on Sunday, granting officers the power to search people or vehicles for offensive weapons without the need for prior suspicion.
To support these efforts, additional officers, including Dog Units and the Operational Support Group, were deployed to patrol the area. The force also utilised Live Facial Recognition cameras on Sunday to monitor the city centre. Local Policing Inspector Penny McQuade stated that Southend remains a city open for business and enjoyment, but that it is closed for crime.
Legal proceedings are currently underway regarding the disturbance. A 15-year-old boy from North London has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a Class B drug, and he is due to appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on 22 June. A 12-year-old girl from Southend was also arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and violent disorder; she has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
