Essex Police have increased the number of officers on the streets in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, after two men were charged following an attempted raid on a local jewellery shop. The force issued the update to reassure the public following a series of significant local incidents.
Leon Roper, 47, and Nathaniel White, 39, both from Birmingham, are appearing at Southend Magistrates’ Court today, February 19, 2026. They have been charged with attempted burglary and violent disorder in connection with the incident at Alex John Jewellers on Weston Road earlier this week.
According to Essex Police, the extra patrols are designed to help local businesses and the public feel more secure. Southend-on-Sea City Council is also sending out community safety officers to help keep the city centre safe.
Detective Inspector Steve Franklin said the police will use all available resources to target those committing crimes against local shops. He explained that the force is working with other police teams across the country to ensure their reach goes beyond the Essex borders.
Residents are encouraged to report any concerns to the police by calling 101 or by contacting Crimestoppers if they wish to remain anonymous. The police presence follows a difficult week for the community, which has also seen heightened concern following a fatal plane crash at London Southend Airport in July 2025.
