More than 350 apprentices are now working in various roles at the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, including at Southend University Hospital in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. These new recruits are helping to support staff and improve the experience for patients during National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from February 9 to February 15, 2026.

At Southend University Hospital, specific roles include Lisa Maddin, who is training as an occupational therapy apprentice, and Maia Odd, who works as a senior leader managing a team of 22 people in breast screening services. These roles allow local residents to earn a wage while training for professional careers in the health service.

The trust is currently working to manage an 85 million pound budget gap and plans to reduce its total number of staff positions by 743 before the end of March 2026. Using apprenticeship funding is one way the organisation aims to keep services running for the community during this time.

This increase in apprentices comes as hospitals face high demand, with national emergency department wait times reaching record levels in January 2026. According to the Care Quality Commission, Southend University Hospital has previously faced extreme pressure and has implemented new units to help hand over patients from ambulances more quickly.
