Residents in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, are being told to prepare for a week of persistent rain and gusty winds as a series of low-pressure systems move across the Thames Estuary.

The Met Office has forecast gusts of up to around 31 mph at times during the week of 9–15 February 2026, which, together with heavy rain, may lead to travel disruption and affect coastal activities.

Heavy rain totals of around 30–40mm are possible in some parts of the area, which could cause surface-water flooding on local roads.

Southend-on-Sea City Council has advised people to check for the latest travel updates before setting off. People planning to use the seafront or Southend Pier should also check the pier operator’s status, as the pier’s walkway is routinely closed in high winds.

Forecasters expect temperatures to fall later in the week; some models indicate a strong chance of wintry weather, possibly including snow around Sunday 15 February 2026, though there is uncertainty in longer-range forecasts.

Coastal routes and seafronts are likely to be affected by spray and large waves caused by the wind. People using small boats or walking along the coast are encouraged to take extra care while these conditions persist.
