Southend-on-Sea City Council has increased security patrols in the city centre following an attempted armed robbery at Alex John Jewellers on February 16, 2026. Local leaders have stepped up visibility to reassure shoppers and businesses after a masked gang targeted the store on Weston Road at around 10:15 am.

The group used weapons including a machete, axes, and sledgehammers to break into the shop before fleeing the area empty-handed. Following a rapid response from the police, two men were intercepted and arrested in Bedfordshire. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the suspects remain in custody.

Cllr Martin Terry, the Cabinet Member for Community Safety, thanked the police for their quick work and stated that violent incidents like this are extremely rare in the city. He emphasised that Southend remains a safe place for visitors and residents alike.

To help people feel more comfortable, the council has deployed Community Safety Officers to carry out regular high-visibility patrols in the busy shopping district. These officers will work alongside the police to support local shopkeepers and keep the city centre safe for everyone.
