Freedom Leisure has apologised to residents in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, for ongoing problems with water temperatures in the main pool at the Southend Leisure & Tennis Centre. The operator released the statement on February 20, 2026, after swimmers complained that the water was cooler than expected for several weeks.
Engineers worked on the heating system on February 17, 2026, as part of a project to replace two new boilers and various pumps. The improvements also include new heat exchange plates, which are parts used to transfer heat to the water, and a modern computerised system used to manage the temperature of the building.
The temperature issues only affected the 25-metre main pool, while the teaching and diving pools remained at their usual temperatures. Freedom Leisure has been running the centre since July 1, 2025, when it took over the contract from Fusion Lifestyle.
Southend-on-Sea City Council owns the building and is funding the replacement of the heating equipment. Officials stated that these upgrades are necessary to fix maintenance issues and ensure the pool stays warm for visitors in the future.
Regular swimmers and families are advised to check their emails for any updates regarding lesson cancellations or session changes. The centre is also providing daily temperature readings at the main reception desk to keep the public informed of the conditions.
