Essex Police recorded 313 reports of violence and sexual offences in the Southend Central area of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, during January 2026. These incidents accounted for roughly 46 per cent of all crimes reported in the town centre and seafront area throughout the month.

The total number of crimes reported in the district for January was 678, which is a decrease from the 823 reports logged in December 2025. While violence remained the most common concern, other frequent reports included 71 cases of anti-social behaviour and 61 incidents of shoplifting.

Officers also dealt with 43 reports of criminal damage and arson during the same period. These figures provide a clear look at the safety challenges facing local residents and workers in the city’s busiest shopping and nightlife spots.

According to Chief Inspector Dave Browning, the District Commander for Southend, the force has seen an 11 per cent increase in solved crimes compared to the same time last year. This means police successfully handled 366 more offences across the area by the start of 2026.

The latest statistics are being used by local policing teams to plan where to send patrols and how to work with local businesses to keep the high street safe. The data helps the community discuss where more help is needed for victims and where officers should be most visible.
