Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has approved a series of changes to roads and paths to make it safer for people to walk and cycle in Stockport, Greater Manchester. The decision, published on 2 March 2026, will see several streets altered to create better links between the train station, the local college, and residential areas.

Hardman Street will be converted to one-way traffic for drivers heading south between East Street and Gradwell Street. This change allows enough space for a new lane for cyclists heading the opposite way, making the route more direct for those not using cars.

Moseley Street will be closed to motor vehicles where it meets Shaw Heath to create a dedicated route for people on foot or bikes. Improvements are also planned for Hollywood Park, including smoother path surfaces, clearer signs, and new paving designed to help people with visual impairments navigate the area safely.

These updates are funded by the UK Government and the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC). The work is designed to support the 4,000 new homes being built as part of the wider town centre regeneration, making it easier for new residents to travel without needing a car.

Councillor Grace Baynham signed off on the plans following recommendations from a local committee. The council says the measures will help residents move between transport hubs and community areas more easily as the town grows.
