Stockport businesses can now access fully funded online training to help them support employees who are unpaid carers. Local charity Signpost Stockport for Carers is delivering the Think Carer – Carer Champion Workplace Training, a CPD-accredited course designed to help firms spot carers in their workforce and offer practical backing.

Up to 300 employers can put forward a staff member to become a Carer Champion, equipping them with the knowledge to recognise colleagues juggling work with unpaid care and to shape carer-friendly policies. The training forms part of the Stockport VCFSE Work & Skills Fund 2025/26, a UK Government-backed programme run with Sector 3, Stockport Council, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Department for Work and Pensions. It launched in November 2025 and, after an extension via WorkWell, runs until June 2026, with dates available to book during February.

Signpost Stockport for Carers has championed unpaid carers across the borough for more than three decades, from young carers aged six to older adults. The 2021 Census recorded at least 30,000 unpaid carers in Stockport, but the charity believes the real figure is far higher. Bethan Kelly, the organisation’s chief executive, said the funding reflects the daily reality for many residents. “We’re delighted to have been awarded this funding, which recognises the vital role that unpaid carers play in our community and the challenges many face balancing work and caring,” she said. “Our Think Carer, Carer Champion Training will equip businesses with the tools to identify and support carers in the workplace, helping staff stay in employment, improving wellbeing, and building more compassionate, inclusive workplaces across Stockport.”

One participant, Isabelle, described the session as extremely informative and engaging, adding it gave her valuable knowledge that will positively influence how she supports carers at work. The project is one of six funded through the Economic Inactivity Trailblazer and aligns with Stockport’s Live Well initiative, which aims to narrow gaps in access to work and strengthen links between employers and the voluntary and community sector.

Employers interested in joining can book a place through the Eventbrite page for the training.
