A new guided walking tour is set to uncover the hidden history of Stockport, Greater Manchester, on Saturday 21 March 2026. Led by Jonathan Schofield, the “Stockport Secrets” tour will take visitors through the town’s unique streets to explore its sandstone heritage and local stories.
The walk begins at 10:00 am and follows a route through the Underbanks and the Market Place, which are areas carved directly into the red sandstone foundations of the town. Participants will learn about the town’s physical layout and hear accounts of local folklore and tragedies, such as the 1967 British Midland air disaster.
Music history is a major focus of the walk, particularly the legacy of Strawberry Studios, where artists like 10cc and Paul McCartney recorded famous tracks. The tour also highlights grand buildings like The Plaza, an Art Deco cinema and theatre that has been a focal point for the community since 1932.
This event is part of a push to highlight the town as a destination for heritage and culture following its time as the Greater Manchester Town of Culture. Those interested in joining the walk can find more details on the Jonathan Schofield Manchester Tours website.
