Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has agreed to a new plan to create four safe zones for children walking to school across the borough. The council published the agreement on 25 February 2026, which uses a £120,000 government grant to restrict traffic outside school gates during busy times.
The project will establish four new locations for these School Streets and provide extra support for four zones that are already running in the area. This work follows a successful bid for funding sent to Transport for Greater Manchester in March 2025.
Mark Glynn, the Director of Place Management for the council, approved the deal after speaking with Councillor Grace Baynham. The goal is to make it easier for families to walk or cycle to school by stopping cars from driving through specific streets during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
The council previously organised a public consultation in late 2025 to hear what residents thought about the plans. These measures are designed to improve safety for pupils and reduce the number of cars idling near school entrances.
