Residents in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, will see the return of brown bin collections in March 2026 as Sunderland City Council resumes its seasonal garden waste service. The service runs from March to mid-November and includes 17 fortnightly collections.

To guarantee a full season of collections, residents should subscribe or check their auto-renewal status with Sunderland City Council via https://www.sunderland.gov.uk/gardenwaste by the end of February 2026. The service is a paid subscription for residential properties and covers organic garden materials such as grass cuttings and hedge clippings; it is not funded through Council Tax.

Official garden waste terms and conditions remind residents that brown bins remain the property of the council. Residents must present their brown bin at the kerbside before 7:30am on their scheduled collection day and return it to their property as soon as possible after it is emptied.

Only approved compostable garden waste should be placed in the brown bins — the council will not collect bins that contain plastic or soil. Following these rules helps keep local footpaths clear and ensures the collected materials can be processed into mulch and soil conditioner.
