Residents in Sunderland can now sign up for the Active Sunderland BIG 3K Run, which will take place on Sunday 17 May 2026. The event is organised by Active Sunderland (Sunderland City Council’s wellness initiative) in partnership with Events of the North, and is designed for families, beginner runners and junior club runners to enjoy a 3km route on closed city‑centre roads.

The run will start and finish at Keel Square / St. Mary’s Way, with roads closed to traffic for the morning. It is part of the Sunderland City Runs weekend, managed by Events of the North, which also includes a 10K and a half marathon for more experienced runners.

Organisers moved the date to 17 May 2026 to avoid a clash with a Sunderland AFC home fixture, according to local reporting. Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: “The BIG Events are a brilliant way for people to get active, feel good and enjoy being part of something positive. Last year’s turnout showed just how much residents value these opportunities.”

Entry prices have been frozen. Sunderland City Council lists the current options as: Adult £7.50 (Adult with T‑shirt £12), Child £7.50 (includes T‑shirt), and Child aged 5–8 plus accompanying adult £12.50 (BIG 3K Run only). Finishers will receive a finisher medal on the day; a race t‑shirt is available as an optional add‑on or included with certain ticket types.
